Turn 1 deadline

Turn 1 deadline

Postby Whitehorn on Fri Feb 12, 2010 2:08 pm

Due to some pretty dire events this week, I am shifting the deadline for turn 1 to Wednesday 17th February and Thursday 18th February. Bring your bits to the club night and/or evening session and I'll tally up points :)
I play everything, PM me for a game.

Sounds good. I've been entangling myself in a mire of Matt Medium. I think it was supposed to go in the paint, but eh.

You're only supposed to use a tiny dab of it :P

Yeah I know. It's been good-ish so far. I found that it flattens down the colour but also makes it's sort of grainy. I have been doing this with foundations though, which are relatively grainy to begin with.

Didn't work so well with washes though. Caused the whole coffee-stain thing to happen :/

Two problems there, its not intended for washes, being a medium for medium pigment acrylic paint - and foundations are already matte! (as are washes, to an extent) The only way to really extra matte citadel washes is a matte spray coat afterwards. Otherwise there is also a tiny shine to it. You're better off mixing medium to regular citadel paints and thinning them to the absalute max and doing several seperatley dried layers of wash, building up a more gradual shade/glaze and retaining the matte effect.

The grainy feel is the high pigment count in the foundation paint, less water.

What medium are you using?

Windsor Newton I think, picked it up in Crobbyhaft.

Some evil swine told me that matt medium could be used with washes >: (

Nothing to stop you using it, but you're not going to get the best results unless you thin it right down.

I suppose if you thin it alot and then mix it with the wash you might find it works better. Otherwise you're thickening the wash.

If you are using matte on detail work, I'd still advise making your own washes and glazes anyway. Citadel ones are great but too clumsy for anything that needs to stand up to close attention.

Nah this was just for the fur on the horses. Idea was to use a flat grey and then darken it down with Badab to create a quick and easy black fur (I don't like painting horse fur) but this came out way too shiny.

Worst thing is I can't remember which Grey I used before. Thought it was Charadon Granite but that is more brown than grey. Might have been Adeptus Battle Grey come to think of it, I should try that again with matt medium... hmm...

adeptus battlegrey was what you told me. Its the wash that shines the surface, matting and already matte paint wont make any difference.

More peculiar behaviour now. I tried Adeptus Battle Grey + Badab Black last night and it worked well, not (too) shiny, no Matt Medium involved. No idea what was done different from last time, except that I wasn't working under a hot lamp this time...

If a heat source affects washes in this way then I need to find a cold lamp.
